Civil War Washington VFX Breakdown | Framestore

The close-quarters fighting you see in Civil War will, generally speaking, feature a deft mix of in-camera action and invisible VFX.

But did you know that our VFX team built a full 13 square miles of Washington DC? Not only did they craft 75 iconic monuments, but they procedurally modeled every single detail, from the heights of different types of building to the size of their windows. The team created a fully-functioning network of traffic lights and street lamps and ‘planted’ almost 18,000 trees exactly where they should be placed.

What’s more, they also decorated the building interiors, to ensure the film’s Washington DC was as close to a living, breathing city as it could possibly be. From emergency exit signs and desk clutter to air conditioning units to subtle variations in lighting from office to office, our CG DC was minutely crafted to give off a sense of lived-in realism and sudden abandonment.
