Although Industrial Light & Magic's advanced fluid simulation system had been honored with a Sci-Tech Award from the Academy in 2007, for "Battleship" the visual effects team knew they would have to completely re-engineer the system from the ground up if they were going to be able to meet the demands of Peter Berg's sci-fi epic.
