Amazing Detailed Hollywood VFX Breakdown 'Elysium'

With the amount that technology has advanced in recent years, the desire to use it has become increasingly higher. But with such a high percentage of CGI used in a modern movie, it can become hard to keep it looking realistic.

So, in order to achieve an acceptable amount of realism, directors try to include as much footage of 'real' things as possible. Here's an example of a good blend of real footage and CGI.

One great example of this blend at work can be seen in the 2013 film Elysium.
Director Neill Blomkamp, who also directed District 9 back in 2009 did an amazing job of including as much real footage as possible for the movie, including props, sets, miniature set models, as well as real locations around the world. For example, for the locations on earth, in the first part of the movie, they traveled to one of the worlds largest garbage dumps located in Mexico.

They used real props whenever they could and when it wasn't possible, like for example the shots of futuristic spacecrafts or the droids, they used helicopters and people in motion tracking suits, for a better interaction and reference of movement. These were all then replaced in post production with CGI by the visual effects company 'Image Engine'.

In order to control the droids, they used a custom-rigging system with 686 controls on the base droid model. that included fine detail offset controls for piston positions and tweak controls for cables to help animators match specific silhouettes and offset positions of the cables.

For the scenes in space, achieving the same amount of realism is obviously a lot harder to do as the huge Elysium, orbiting the earth was around 40km in diameter and 2km wide, giving a total circumference of 125.6km.
However, the giant Elysium did have very real looking terrain and this is thanks to aerial footage, flying over the city of Malibu. After removing the roads and keeping the mansions, this really helped give the Elysium that look of blissful paradise.
