9 Times Actors Did it For REAL! No CGI

When CGI is done right it's impossible to tell virtual from reality. But every so often it looks so real, that it actually is!
Here are 10 moments where actors did it for real without CGI.

1. Tom Cruise "Mission: Impossible"
Throughout the "Mission: Impossible" franchise, Tom Cruise has done a lot of his own stunts. He ACTUALLY scaled the world's tallest building, the Burj Khalifa, clung onto the side of an Airbus 400 in flight, and learned how to safely crash a helicopter.

2. Chris Evans "Captain America: Civil War"
Captain America tries to stop a helicopter from taking off in "Captain America: Civil War." Though the helicopter was attached to a crane, Chris Evans lunged towards the aircraft and held on without VFX.

3. Iota "Mad Max: Fury Road"
Coma the Doof Warrior is one of the most iconic background characters in Fury Road. And looks very grounded in his scenes. This is because musician Iota did it for real; playing a flame-throwing guitar whilst hanging from a speeding truck whilst blindfolded...

4. "Inception"
To create the illusion of a hotel losing gravity, rather than using greenscreens or CGI, the production team actually built a giant rotating hallway. Joseph Gordon Levitt fought stuntmen on wires as the set rotated around them.

5. Emily Blunt "Mary Poppins Returns"
In "Mary Poppins Returns," the Banks' children embark on an underwater journey by disappearing into a bathtub. To capture old Hollywood magic, actress Emily Blunt slid backward through the bathtub's bottom for real, which was connected to an underground slide.

6. Keanu Reeves "John Wick"
To portray world-class assassin John Wick, Keanu Reeves trained hard to master skills from firearms to judo, and jiu-jitsu. His commitment helped the production choreograph long in-camera fight sequences that have re-invented the action genre.

7. "Twister"
Obviously, the tornadoes in "Twister" were CGI. However, Bill Paxton and Helen Hunt were caught in the middle of dangerous practical effects. A majority of their scenes included jet engines blasting 200 mph winds, giant ice blocks being shredded into hail, and objects dropping from cranes.

8. "Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind"
Exploring heartbreak and memories between the lead characters, Jim Carrey shrank down to a child in front of life-size co-star Kate Winslet. Whilst this would have been easy to do with VFX, the production team opted for the use of practical effects in stead, making the set with a slanted floor and skewed rectangular surface to make Carrey look smaller.

9. Margot Robbie "Suicide Squad"
"Suicide Squad" is filled with special effects, however, one scene emulating a car crash into a riverbank is real. Actress Margot Robbie learned how to free dive for this scene and held her breath for five minutes.
